Summary[edit]

Description

Crosby welcomed the Olympic torch in world record breaking fashion on Friday June 1st, as thousands of school children smashed the world record for the biggest human Olympic rings logo formation. A massed crowd of 5,880 pupils from 46 schools across Sefton dressed in yellow, black, red, green and blue T-shirts to form the famous hoops on Crosby beach, while thousands of proud parents and residents watched from the surrounding Promenade and sand dunes. Sefton Council, Sefton CVS and local volunteers acted as stewards and organisers throughout the event.

After standing in formation for more than 10 minutes, the huge gathering, which is expected to be confirmed by Guinness as a new world record, smashed the previous record set last month in Bath when 2,234 people formed the five Olympic rings in Royal Victoria Park.

"It was spectacular," said Emma McCormick, a teacher at Linaker Primary School, Southport, whose pupils formed part of the green ring.

Leader of Sefton Council, Cllr Peter Dowd, was at the event. He said: "To watch a world record being broken on Crosby beach was truly amazing. Once in formation, it was a spectacular sight with the Antony Gormley statues in the background, along with the famous Sefton coastline. The world record attempt and the Olympic Torch relay has really put Sefton on the national map during a time of real celebration. Special thanks goes to all the schools involved and the likes of Merseyrail, Merseyside Police, the RNLI lifeguard service, all the volunteers and our other partner agencies who made this special feat happen."
