| Description | U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agriculture Research Service's Jackson Fisher (not seen), showed the 12 Borlaug Fellows from Afghanistan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL), the metallic Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) cable tester, laptop and uninterrupted power supply of a Soil Plant Atmosphere Research (SPAR) unit, during their tour of the Global Climate Change Lab, in Beltsville, MD, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011. SPAR units provide precise control of the major environmental variables influencing crop growth including temperature, humidity, and atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. The SPAR units are fully automated to measure crop canopy gas exchange including photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration and water use efficiency. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung. |
