Summary[edit]

Description 200-S-KWG-2: Korean Punitive Expedition, 1871. Photostat print of U.S. Navy forces viewing Rose Island and entrance to Salt River. On 1 June 1871, an unprovoked attack by shore batteries from two Korean forts were made on two ships of Commodore John Rodgers squadron, where were carrying the US Foreign Minister to China, Frederick Low. Minister Low was sent to negotiate trade with Korea. When no explanation for the attack was offered, a punitive expedition destroyed the forts and inflicted heavy casualties on the Koreans on 10-11 June. Following these actions, Low decided the mission was a failure and set sail on 3 July. Other squadron ships were: USS Palos, USS Alaska, USS Monocacy, and USS Benicia. (6/2/2015).
