1st Century AD: Roman Dolphin Brooch By: Dom Andrews |

Description |
English: This is a Dolphin type Roman brooch; which would have had a spring mechanism. The brooch therefore dates to the 1st Century AD. The brooch is 39.0mm in length (from the head to the foot) and 32.5mm wide (measured across the arms). The arms are still intact. They are decorated with a grooved pattern. The grooves radiate from the head of the brooch as if they were cloth wrapped vertically around the arms. A diagonal groove across both arms stops the vertical grooves from continuing underneath. These diagonal spaces are not decorated. The head and the bow of the brooch are also free from decoration, though the brooch tapers to the foot. Turning the object over, a semi-circular, concave groove (on the reverse of the arms) shows where the spring mechanism would once have been. This groove has evidence of iron staining. At the foot of the brooch (on the reverse) the catch plate is still intact. Neither the spring nor the pin remains. The find has a dark patina. |
