A very early Hino truck in NZ - the Contessa car had already been available in the mid 1960s but Hino's trucks didn't really arrive here until the 1970s. This truck has obviously been restored as have many in the collection and the lettering is to a legitimate Lower Hutt carrier, L.G. Anderson, who operated some of these Hino KLs in the 70s - but this truck actually started life with the NZ Fire Service as a fire tender with a water tank and pump on the rear deck. I can't find out where it was first registered, but seeing as the Fire Service sold it to the Dunedin City Council in 1995 who kept it for use in North and Central Otago I would imagine it originated in Dunedin. These were apparently assembled in NZ, in Lower Hutt of all places. What I find very unusual, however, is how this truck ended up with an 'A*' plate (the very first combination made when the black plates were introduced in 1964/65) when it was registered a decade later in mid 1975? I know in those days that in certain places where very few cars were registered the old series of plates may have taken years to be issued, but surely not in the main centres, such as Dunedin where this was presumably first registered? It should have at least an 'H*' plate. |
