| Description | This car was built in Leongatha, Australia by Jim and Alan Hawker, it took them from 1938-62 and is believed to be the first mid-engined car produced in Australia. The Clutch and gearbox were mounted behind the centrally mounted engine, giving almost exactly equal front/rear weight distribution, access to the engine via a side door. The suspension was unique too, all four wheels move vertically on tubular slides, two per wheel, against coil springs and hydraulic shock absorbers. Only the engine and gearbox was bought in, everything else was made in house. Originally powered by a Ford sidevalve V8, then a Studebaker Avanti V8. |
