| Description | 1956 Holden FJ ambulance. Taken at Temora Rural Museum, Temora NSW. This fully restored ambulance was originally operated by the Temora District of the New South Wales Ambulance Transport Service Board. Modified from a factory built panel van. Ambulance modifications include side windows (in black glass), rear barn door conversion (originally fitted with two piece tailgate), modified front bench seat (bench has been cut in half so that the stretcher fits in) and rear nurse's seat. It was converted for ambulance duties by W. S. Grice Motor Body Works in the Sydney suburb of Summer Hill. When commissioned it was one of three ambulances in operation in Temora, the other two being International Harvester trucks, also converted by Grice's. One of the Internationals, a 1953 AR 110 was later converted for use as a Rescue Unit, and can be seen in this photo. It was due to be decommissioned and disposed of when it was saved at the last minute for inclusion as a museum piece. It is in original (unrestored) condition. The other International is reported to be under restoration by the local vintage car club. |
