Back cover of a brochure from Socialisme ou Barbarie (1956)

Summary[edit]

Description

English: This is a scan of the back cover of a brochure published in December 1956 by Socialisme ou Barbarie (a french revolutionary group) : « L'insurrection Hongroise. Questions aux militants du P.C.F. ». (One could translate : "The Hungarian uprising. Questions to the militants of the P.C.F. [i.e. French Communist Party]")

As indicated just below the framed text, this tract was published as a supplement to n°20 of the review (december 1956—february 1957), which is mainly devoted to the 1956 revolts in Europe « La révolution en Pologne et en Hongrie ». (One could translate : "Revolution in Poland and Hungary")

More materially : Format 225 x 140 mm, 48 pages ; Address at « 42, rue René Boulanger - Paris (Xe) » ; « C.C.P. : Paris 11.987-19 » ; Printer « "IMPRIMERIE CARACTÈRES", 5, rue Gît-le-Cœur, PARIS-6e ».

One could translate the text on the back cover :
« The Socialisme ou Barbarie group, founded in 1949,
publishes the Review of the same name, twenty issues of which have
appeared to date. The positions developed in this Review
are nothing other than the application of the fundamental
ideas of revolutionary Marxism to the problems of our
time. These ideas have been systematically distorted and
finally abandoned by the traditional workers' parties,
"socialist" and "communist", which are completely domi-
nated by an irremovable bureaucracy, foreign and hostile
to the proletariat even if it comes from its ranks. This bureau-
cracy uses the workers' struggle to pursue its
own goals — sometimes to carve out a place for itself in the mana-
gement of the capitalist regime, sometimes to oust the bourgeoisie and
replace it, by the "nationalization" and the "plan-
ning" of the economy. But “nationalization” and
“planning” are in no way equivalent to socia-
lism and can become the basis of an exploitation of
the proletariat by the bureaucracy which is in no way inferior to
that practiced by capitalism. Socialism is the
workers' management of factories and the economy, it is the po-
wer of Councils or workers' Committees over all social
life. The only path that leads to it is the autonomous
and conscious action of the working masses. The Revolution is a
phase of this mass action, not the coup d’Etat
of a militarized party which establishes its own dictatorship. The
new organizations of the working class will have to be
based on a proletarian democracy ; militants will no
longer be mere executants of a ruling bureau-
cracy, but will actively participate in guiding the
activity of the organization in all its aspects. »

This text was probably written by Cornelius Castoriadis (in French, it is written according to his style of writing).
