Summary[edit]

Description
English: Alfred B Kramer Fruit Store - Sixth and Tilghman (547 Tilghman) - Allentown PA

What was known as "Eddie's 6th Street Market" was built in 1922 by Edward Freyman as a small newsstand and corner market at 547 Tilghman Street, the northeast corner of 6th and Tilghman streets selling produce. The market was very popular with people in the neighborhood, as well as people using Tilghman Street to stop at for a quick purchace.

The photo, taken in August 1940 was when it was known as Kramer's Market, then being owned by Alfred B. Kramer. At the time, the building next door to it on North 6th Street was the Congregation Sons of Israel. The Sons of Israel were seeking an injunction to force the store to remove its overhead roof and sidewalk displays, saying they were obstructions.

While still in court, Allentown City Council ordered Kramer to remove the sidewalk displays or face a fine. Kramer brought a counter-suit in July 1941, demanding that the city enforce the order against 85 other businesses that also used a small part of the sidewalk in front of their businesses. A compromise with city Council was reached which allowed Kramer to install large windows. Customers could still see his produce without it blocking the sidewalk.

Over the years, it went though a series of owners, the last being John Edward "Eddie" Tomasik who bought the property in 1962, renaming it Eddie's 6th Street Market

Eddie Tomasik retired when the market was purchaced in the late 1970s and torn down. In addition to running the market, Tomasik was a former Golden Gloves boxing champion and a director of the Allentown Boy's Club. He passed at age 81 in Mount Pleasant South Carolina in June, 2000.

Today, there is a small wall along Tilghman Street at the site to enclose the grassy area of the now Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church. The concrete sidewalk has been replaced, and no trace of Eddie's Market remains.
