Summary

[edit]
Description

Western pine beetle insect cage on ponderosa pine. Type of muslin cage erected about the base of healthy yellow pine tree to force attack of western pine beetle. Bark infested by the beetles placed inside the cage. When the adults emerge, they attack the caged portion of the trunk. These attacks did not kill tree but set up attraction which resulted in drawing other D. brevicomis from the field to attack the portion of the trunk above the cage. The nearest tree containing a brood was approximately 1/2 mile distant from the cage. Similar experiments were conducted at the Pacific Slope Station in 1919. Data of this experiment were submitted under Hopk. U.S. 16200. Jenny Creek, Oregon.
