Description 1902 begann das Zementwerk Nürtingen am Hörnle mit dem Abbau von Kalkstein und Mergel. Ende der 1970er-Jahre wurde der aufgelassene Steinbruch rekultiviert: Zur optischen Gestaltung der bis zu 130 Meter hohen Felswand pflanzte man auf den vier Bermen (Absätzen) Gehölze an. Seit 1980 entwickelt sich der Steinbruch fast ohne menschlichen Einfluss.
