Summary[edit]

Description

On 12 April 1924 the closing races for the 1923-24 boat racing season in Auckland were held. The course was from King's Wharf, via the saltworks beacon in Rangitoto Channel, keeping to the channel side of Sandspit beacon, to Bean Rock lighthouse and the red beacon off Islington Bay. Both launches and sailing ships were able to enter various classes, and clubs, including the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron, the Akarana Yacht Club, the NZ Power Boat Association and the Ponsonby Cruising Club took part. One of the keelers racing for the Akarana club was the ""Speedwell"" a 25 foot single masted cutter, built by A Bailey Jnr in Auckland, and registered there in 1900. The yacht was first owned by William Albert Wilkinson, and then by J Patrick. Speedwell finished third in its class. Overall 262 boats took part in the races. On 17 April the Speedwell finished first out of 26 boats taking part in a race from Auckland to Coromandel. This item is from the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand.
