Summary[edit]

Description
English: Wilhelm Werner Otto Graf von Schwerin (16.03.1773 – 18.06.1815) was killed leading the 6th Prussian Hussar Regiment on 18 June 1815 at the Battle of Waterloo.

The quadrilingual information board, provided by local authorities, reads : The Schwerin Monument, erected to the memory of the Prussian colonel, Friedrich Wilhelm Count von Schwerin. Injured by French scouts, he died at Genleau on the plateau of the Paris Wood and was buried here on 18 June 1815.

First time mentioned : "Lasne. (...) Monument : tombeau du comte de Schewereinsic, officier prussien." – seems to be the first published mention of the tomb of Count of Schwerin. (Havard, J.M., Dictionnaire géographique, topographique, historique, (...) de Belgique, 1840, 186, col.1).

The main source of information about the monument, on which all subsequent authors have drawn in cascade, provides a wealth of details, among which : He was hastily buried in a small wood, near the place where a monument was erected to him. Two or three years later, his family had his remains searched, which were discovered thanks to the indications of a cowgirl. (Tarlier, Jules ; Wauters, Alphonse : Géographie et histoire des communes belges. Province de Brabant. Canton de Wavre, February 1864, 91, col.1 – translated).

Plaque affixed onto the monument : ►(File:18_June_1815_–_Waterloo_–_Monument_to_Wilhelm_Count_of_Schwerin,_plaque.jpg).

Countess Amalia Sophie von Dönhoff (16.07.1785 – 27.01.1863), widow of Colonel (Oberst) Wilhelm von Schwerin, not only had the monument built at her sole cost and expense, ca. 1820, she also generously provided, by a will dated 01.12.1840, for the site to be maintained (more details in her biography, cfr. infra).
