Description
English: 18 June 1815 – Hougoumont Farm, at Braine-l'Alleud. –– Silent memorial to Victims of the napoléonic régime.

From left to right : behind the trees, the various corps de logis adjoining each others ; futher right, the Stables and the Great Barn ; in front of the Stables, the chapel. The Ferraris Map (1770-1778), folio 78, depicts the same buildings under the name Chateau d'Hougoumont, also commanding a vast formal garden to its west. All peaceful and thriving – at that time.

Aftermath of Napoleone Buonaparte's incursion on June 18th, 1815 :
This place, the villa of a gentleman, was reduced to ruins, resembling a house burnt down. A little chapel, too, belonging to it has also been injured. (Charles Campbell, The Traveller's Complete Guide Through Belgium & Holland, 2nd edition, 1817, 69.

Where trees and walls the mournfoul records bore
Of war's wild rage, trunks pierc'd with many a wound,
And roofs half burnt and rafters on the ground.
