English: In 1688 while traveling through the Chicago region, Henri Jourtel, in his journal, gave rise to the folk etymology that the region was named after the indigenous "wild onions." In 1892 Joseph Kirkland identified this plant as the Allium tricoccum. It is pictured on his book, The Story of Chicago. |
