Summary[edit]

Description The White House in the 1860s during the Civil War. This photograph is in the PD because the author died more than 70 years ago, for the picture was taken in the 1860s. It shows the statue of Thomas Jefferson by Pierre-Jean David (David d'Angers) on the North lawn, placed there in 1847. The statue later was moved to the East entrance, and then returned in 1874 to its original place in the rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
