Memorandum To: Regional Director, Northeast Region From: Superintendent, Gettysburg Subject: Proposed Arkansas Memorial There has been correspondence with the Gettysburg Memorial Committee of Arkansas regarding proposed construction of an Arkansas memorial. Last fall Mr. Neill Bohlinger and a group were here to go over a proposed location. The site chosen was one along West Confederate Avenue adjacent to Anderson’s Brigade tablet. This location coincides with previous determinations in regard to other Confederate memorials, we believe. The marker shown in the picture will have to be moved a short distance to the south “left of picture”. The text has been reviewed here and we have no suggested changes. The design appears to be restrained and generally satisfactory. Enclosed are additional data regarding the materials and specifications. The Cobb Memorials, Inc. have asked a question regarding the foundation. We are suggesting that they provide us with their own recommendations based on size and weight of the monument and its geographic location. This could be reviewed later we suppose. In the interest of saving time, however, since the committee is planning a ceremony in May, we believe that the enclosed data are adequate for securing a decision from the Director. It is our understanding that bronze has been a standard medium in most of the monuments here at Gettysburg. There seems no special reason, however, to prohibit other materials. We recommend approval. George F. Emery
