Негомологічне з'єднання кінців (Non-homologous end joining, NHEJ) та гомологічна рекомбінація (homologous recombination, HR). При гомологічній рекомбінації для зшивання ДНК розриву використовується матриця цілої молекули ДНК (синя), таким чином можна точно скопіювати послідовність нуклеотидів і відновити молекулу ДНК. Тоді як негомологічне з'єднання кінців призводить або к делеціям або к інсерціям нуклеотидів.
