Description

Farewell to the Benelux IC Service Part Three.

Closest to the camera is SNCB/NMBS class 28 loco, E186.226. Part of the TRAXX group of locomotives for cross border services, these were the staple power for the hourly Benelux InterCity services from Brussels to Amsterdam via the classic route from 2009 until the service was discontinued in December 2012. These replaced the ageing and increasingly unreliable class 11 locos which worked these trains since the late-1980s. One disadvantage of the operation is that they could not work in push pull operation, therefore running round or a turnover loco is required at each end. By this point, reversals at Antwerpen Centraal were no longer necessary, the station having been rebuilt. The rolling stock used was that built in 1986/7 for this route - the Plan ICR3 and ICR4. Stock was refurbished and included fitting of air conditioning. When the operation went over to TRAXX haulage, the driving trailers were withdrawn. In addition, a rake of former Austrian (ÖBB) stock was utilised on the Amsterdam to Brussels IC route although provided less seats than the NS owned stock.
