Title
16-17th century Crotal bell
Description
English: A complete worn cast copper-alloy Post Medieval (c. 1500-1800) crotal bell. The bell comprises two hemispherical domes divided horizontally by a circumferential ridge. The upper hemisphere has two circular sound holes both poorly formed possibly due to casting fault, one is near key hole shaped. A square suspension loop projects from the apex of the upper dome, with a likely drilled hole. The lug has clear striation indicating post casting modificaiton or bevelling.. The lower hemisphere has a long, wide sound slit with circular holes at the ends. The inner iron ball or clapper remains.

Both hemispheres are decorated, the upper with a geometric petal design which is particularly worn perhaps due to swinging against a suspension chain or animal collar. Iron corrosion around the suspension loop maybe evidence of this addtional suspension element. The lower hemisphere of the bell is decorated with a geometric scaled design.

R Blunt's (undated) work suggests, based on the one piece design, drilled suspension combined with decoration on both hemispheres, a date from the 16-17th centuries AD.
