Title
15th century iconographic ring
Description
English: A worn cast gilt-silver finger ring of iconographic type dating to the 15th - early 16th century.

Description: The ring has a segmented band made up facetted lozenges each of which has a slight concave upper surface. At its apex is a flat rectangular bezel is engraved with a representation of the Trinity - the seated, haloed figure of God the father, supporting a haloed Christ on the cross, and with a dove in the top right corner perching on the shoulder of god, representing the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. The top left corner has some texturing possibly intended to be a sun beam of God has a halo. The gilding mainly remains in good condition with one lozenge showing some silver.

Measurements: 21.36mm high, 20.5mm wide, 8.09mm thick (at the bezel and 4mm thick band) 4.46g in weight.

Discussion: Frequently given as New Years and wedding gifts iconographic rings of the 15th century originate in the cult of saints some point in the late 14th century, with the type not surviving the English Reformation (Scarisberick and Henig 2003, 42-43). A number of similar rings with the less common segmented band or related types have been reported to the PAS as treasure e.g.: <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/848808">WMID-439C61</a> (2003T353), <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/797260">GLO-88A3D5</a> (2016T669), <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/476210">BUC-E07744</a> (2011T852), <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/288039">IOW-303137</a> (2010T70), <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/238852">NLM-688C74</a> (NLM-688C74) and <a href="https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/403956">YORYM-39B423</a> (2010T495).

Conclusion: It is therefore clear that this ring dates to before 1718 and as the object is made of more than 10% precious metals, it constitutes potential Treasure under the stipulations of The Treasure Act 1996.
