Title |
15th century finger-ring |
||
Description |
English: A fragment of a medieval silver signet ring, dating to the 15th century.
Description: The fragment comes from the uper section of the ring, representing part of the bezel and shoulders. The bezel has an engraved monogram of the initials SI or SIT within a squre box. The remains of the shoulders indicate they were wide, triangular and tapered to a relatively thin band typical of the period. What remains of the ring is in relatively good condition although the breaks are fairly jagged and unworn suggesting the damage occured relatively recently. Dimensions: Max width: 20mm. Max height: 12mm. Discussion: Signets rings with simple designs often of initials or symbols became fashionable in the 15th and 16th centuries but by the second half of the 17th century their popularity had declined (Oman 1974, 33). Similar examples albeit in copper-alloy are fairly common finds on the PAS such as KENT-017AA5. This eexample likely fits the early part of the chronology. |
