15th C. Cloth seal - illustration
Description
English: Lead cloth seal. Distorted and damaged circular ulnage seal showing head of St.Paul, patron of London, facing in a six arched double tressure with trefoils at four points. Central design is surrounded by inscription and reads CIVI [TATE].......NNOR....[SVLNAGII:PA]NNOR[V:IN]CIVI[TATE LON]. Lombardic lettering. Badly worn and damaged. On the reverse there is a small knob of lead towards the centre. This is the remnant of a small handle. Medieval in date. Probably 15th C. Measures 28.3mm diameter, by 3mm thick. Weight = 6.12g.
