Title
15th-16th century silver-gilt ring
Description
English: A silver-gilt finger ring dating to the 15th or 16th century.

Description: The bezel is formed of a rectangle with a raised central ridge and two lightly sloping faces. Each facet is decorated with a series of repeated incised triangle patterns which are widest at the ridge and terminate towards the hoop. The shoulders of the ring are decorated with a cross hatched pattern underlined on each side by two incised semicircles. The inside of the hoop is plain.

Dimensions: diameter 22mm, width of bezel, 7mm, length of bezel, 13mm and 5.85g in weight

Discussion: This type of ring is related to contemporary iconographic rings but lacking the religious imagery, instead having simple geometric or floral decoration. For other similar examples that have been reported through the Treasure process see IOW-B474A8 (2014 T432) and WILT-D4C477 (2013 T446) both of which have a similar form and simple decoration, including similar shape and decoration on the side panels of IOW-B474A8. WILT-469F46 (2010 T23) is also similar but with a more elaborate incised pattern and ridge down the side panel. All these examples are dated to the 15th to early 16th century, c. AD 1400-1550.
