Description |
The triple portrait of the Electors of Saxony, produced in several variations, had above all a political message. John Frederick (right) commissioned it when he assumed office, after the Emperor had at first refused to bestow him with the title of Elector. By appearing with his predecessors John (left) and Frederick, he pledges his allegiance, as they had, to Empire, Emperor and Reformation. The central panel is cut. Frederick was possibly holding the imperial crown in his right hand, which he had relinquished in favor of Charles V. |
