Description
English: A small worn copper-alloy pedestal medieval uninscribed seal matrix dating to c AD1300-1400.

Descriptions: The matrix is conical in shape witha collar separating the handle from a drilled, slightly lopsided suspension loop topped.The circular matrix has adevice ofan incised eight pointed star, within in which is a crude incised facing head with pronounced nose and no obvious mouth. The head has hair formed of simple lines which appears to show the head has a bowl haircut. Parts of the circumference are quite highly abraded and the handle is partially worn as well due to the corrosion of the copper alloy.

Measurements: The seal matrix is 17.43mm in height, 13.78mm in diameter (at the matrix end), 5.84mm wide (at the suspension loop end), 4.6mm thick (at the suspension loop) and weighs 4.35g.

Discussion: Uninscribed pedestal seal matrices resembling the impersonal seal matrices common from the late 13th or early 14th century (Harvey and McGuiness 1996, 88) date to a similar period possibly coming into common usage slightly later when the inhibition of using another person's seal had abated and personal seals were becoming less common.
