Title |
14th century copper-alloy seal matrix |
||
Description |
English: A cast incomplete copper alloy pedestal/pendant seal matrix dating to the 14th century (Read 2001, 74). The seal matrix is a conical shape with a narrow rounded hexagonal shank which widens slightly towards the now broken top, just preceding the breaks is a shallow notch relating to the now missing suspension loop. At the base the matrix widens significantly to accommodate the die of the matrix which is circular and engraved with the seal design. The design consists of a central abstract crown motif above the letters IHC (an abreviaiton of Jesus). The entire central motif is surrounded by a thin beaded border that divides it from the legend. The legend is clear and reads '+ESTAMORME' which translates as 'is my love'. Thus the seal should be read as 'Jesus, is my love'. Apart from the missing suspension loop the only other damage is a scratch on the reverse of the seal matrix which is aligned with the bottom of the seal design and thus maybe an orientation mark.
Measurements: 17.68mm wide (at the base and 4.91mm diameter stem), 13.39mm high and 6.79g in weight |
