Title
146 BERK-746742: Early Medieval Ring
Description
English: An early-medieval copper alloy finger ring consisting of two strands twisted into one piece. The base of the hoop - where the two strands are joined - is flat. The section of the ring expands towards the bezel, which is the thickest portion of the ring. The ropework hoop may have been gilded. It is similar in style to some Late Saxon and Viking examples and can be compared to HAMP-B7CF73, LVPL-B07C55, SF-16B905 and BH-F06BC6. Kevin Leahy has commented (about LVPL-B07C55) that although similar designs are known from the Viking period, they were also in use in other periods and these ring should not be considered to be exclusively Viking. SF-16B905 also suggests published parallels of finger rings recovered from excavation in Anglo-Scandinavian York (see in particular Mainman and Rogers, 2000: 2585-2586, no. 10520) and a gold finger ring of similar 10th-11th century AD date is noted in Read, 1995: pp. 48-49, no. 176. A 9th - 11th century date is suggested for this example.
