Title
13th century lead seal matrix
Description
English: A worn/abraded and incomplete flat lead non-heraldic personal seal matrix of Medieval date c.AD 1200-1300.

Description: The matrix is flat and circular in plan. On the front is an engraved central eight pointed star or flower formed from oval rays/petals, alternating larger and slightly smaller arranged round a central pellet. This is surrounded by a legend which starts at twelve o'clock and runs retrograde (anti-clockwise) around the matrix. reading "+S'IOh'NIS:F':ROB'TI". The initial mark is a cross pattee made of triangles. This translates 'Seal of John son of Robert'. The reverse of the matrix is worn and has a number of uneven areas of damage. At the apex of the reverse is the stub of an incomplete suspension lug at top of a raised band. The seal matrix is a dark grey colour with some white patination forming.

Measurements: diameter 26.5mm, thickness 11mm (without suspension loop 2.8mm) and weight of 14g.

Discussion: This matrix fits with a group of commonly reported simple lead personal seal matrices dating to the 13th - mid 14th, such as KENT-756138. This group of relatively simple non-heraldic designs and crude personal inscriptions belong to the 13th- century (Harvey and McGuinness 1996. 79-80).
