Title
13th-14th century seal matrix (of William)
Description
English: A complete cast and engraved flat lead medieaval seal matrix, dating c.1200-1350.

Description: The seal matrix is flat and circular in shape although slightly warped and chipped around the circumference. A flat hemispherical pierced lug creates is placed at the top of the reverse creating a suspension loop although it is signficantly off centre. The suspension loop is at the base of decorative Fleur de Lis device. The front is decorated by an inscribed cinqafoil device surrounding by a legend. The legend reads "+S'WILL'IDOVCE(L?)", the initial mark is formed by a simple edge which looks similar ot the apostrophes utilised. The first part of the Matrix is relatively simple to transalte as 'Seal of William', The second part "IDOVCE(L?)" is less clear, but does not appear to be patronymics (indicating familial relationship) and not overtly a placename (unless it actually reads "+S'WILL'I D'OVCE(L?)"). It seems probable that it is occupation related or les likely surname)

Measurements: 22.85mm in diameter, 9.03mm thick (including suspension lug, 4.43mm without)) and 13.91g in weight

Discussion: The close comparison in shape and back decoration with a group of relatively simple personal lead seals dating to the 13th - mid 14th century (such as KENT-366675), suggest this example is of a similar date.
