Title
13th-14th century lead seal matrix
Description
English: A very slightly worn 13th or 14th century (c.1200-1400AD) lead personal seal matrix.

Description:

The seal matrix is flat and circular in shape and although slightly warped and chipped around the circumference. The suspension loop remains at the top of the reverse. The front design features a large central octofoil (eight pettled flower), with alternating large and small petals surrounded by a thin circular line. Surrounding this central design is the legend, running anti-clockwise (retrograde) to allow it to appear the correct way round when stamped. The circumferential legend is near legible as '+ S'ALICIE:REL':h'. Which translates as 'Sigil of Alice Widow of H' . The lettering on the seal matrix is fairly crude and has identifying features of barred Cs and Es and wedged tailed Rs. The matrix is dark grey where not covered mostly as it is by mid white-brown patina mixed with dirt.

Measurements: 23.39mm in diameter, 5.46mm thick and 11.88g in weight.

Discussion:

Relatively simple design suggests this seal belongs to the earlier part of the 13th-14th century time period as suggested by Harvey and McGuinness's (1996. 79-80) for non heraldic personal seals.

REL section of the seal possibly abbreviation of the Latin word RELICTAE, seen used to denote a widow on a small number of noblewomen's seals e.g. 'S[IGILLUM]' ALIC[IAE]' RELICT[AE] ROB[ER]'TI RVLLOC'
