Title
131 Seal Obv
Description
English: Incomplete copper-alloy seal matrix, missing the top of its slender conical handle. The die is made from very thin metal, and is a slightly irregular hexagonal, measuring (across flats) 20.2; 20.0; 19.2mm. The die is very deeply incised, and the central motif is of a bird in profile (facing right on the matrix), feeding another below it, probably a 'pelican in her piety' motif (a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself).

The inscription around the edge is set between plain engraved borders, and begins with a star initial mark close to one of the corners. The second half of the inscription is hard to decipher, but it appears to read * S'RICARDI DE [-]VL CL'I (Seal of Richard of ?Lul Clerk). The shape of this seal matrix is very unusual. It probably dates to the 13th century.
