The chape is is formed of a strip of folded copper alloy to grip the leather scabbard which was held in place with two rivets The strip has identical identical terminals and arms which when folded together forms an L-shape. The corner and top terminal is a trefoil shape, both of which have are accompanied by the rivets by which hte scabbard was held togehter, both rivets remain in situe. The top terminal is also proceeded by a rib where the band thickens. The bototm is formed by the fold of the sheet and is substantially wider than the rest of the strip. The strip is D-shaped in cross-section.

The object is a light green with some mottled brown/coppery areas.

Measurements: 44.52mm wide (band 8.34mm at widest), 7.44mm thick, 48.92mm long and 11.45g in weight.

Discussion:

The terminals are of comparable form to the more elaborate chape from Angel Court, London, dated by Spencer (1961, 214) to the 12th century, probably the period c. 1100-1150.
