12-13th century Seal matrix showing seated king
Description
English: A complete copper alloy seal matrix dating to 12-13th centuries. The seal is a pointed oval shape with an integral lug set at the top of the seal. The front face bears a circumferential legend which reads S. IOh'IS DE LENh'AO[C?]. The legend is proceeded by an initial crossin a square. The central motif, divided from the legend by pellet border, shows seated crowned figure with child sitting on lap both facing left, which dominates centre and right of the motif. Two figures in the left of the motif one kneeling suppliant with arms upraised towards child and 'king', with second figure wearing elongated headdress standing in the background facing the 'king'. Back is bare of decoration. Seal is covered in light green patina with signs of some copper corrosion on the back.
