Title
11th century stirrup strap mount
Description
English: An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup strap-mount of the late early-medieval period, dating from c. AD 1000 - AD 1150. It finds its closest parallels in Williams's Class A, Type 1 mounts, with typical pentagonal form and unadorned.

Description: The mount is pentagonal in form, although the usual semi-circular suspension loop at the apex has snapped away. Each side of the plate has a triangular small projecting knops at as the apex narrows away from the main body. There are two circular rivet holes through the base which correspond with the flange at right angle on the reverse. The front appears to have originally been decorated but due to wear it isn't clear. The Iron rivets remain in situ although are heavily corroded.

Measurements: 32.5mm long, 25.9mm wide, 5.91mm thick (including flange, 2.25mm thick without) and 11.31g in weight.

Discussion: Other similar examples of this type have been recorded on the database, including WMID-1C5C09 and ESS-C36968. These examples appear to be undecorated however as much of the decoration on examples illustrated by Williams (1997, 26-34) are very lightly inscribed, it is possible that these examples originally had incised decoration which has now been worn away.
