Title
11th century stirrup mount with seated figure in amongst knotwork
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount, dating from the 11th centuries of Williams Class A, unclassified subtype.

The vertical portion of the mount is roughly triangle in plan, with a straight horizontal base and a rounded protruding apex pierced suspension loop. The central feature of the relief-moulded design is a seated figure, who faces forwards, arms resting on their thighs, legs apart but his feet crossed. The moulded edge of each vertical side represents the body of a serpent-like creature; the head of each serpent is located at the top, facing inwards about shoulder height. At the base, the body of each serpent loops around the respective leg of the figure before terminating in a scroll. There some additional scrollwork behind the figure's head and into part of the suspension llop which may represent either the figure's hair and/or horns. The back of the mount is undecorrated and is mostly flat except round the figures head where it is concave. The base flange is of right angled alignment with two piercings and two iron rivets which remains in situ and holds the remains of a piece of corroded iron sheet fitting/strip. The stirrup mount is a dark grey clolour and is heavily worn. The Iron fitting sheet and rivets are light brown-orange.

Measurements: 43.71mm high, 28.73mm wide, 13.98mm thick (including flange, body plate itself is 3.82mm thick) and 20.96g in weight.
