Title
11th century sitrrup mount of Williams Class A Type 10b
Description
English: A copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of Williams' Class A, Type 10B (Williams 1997, 57), c.11th century.

Description:

The mount is roughly pear-shaped with apex rivet hole with a rolled rivet flange at the bottom through which other rivet holes would have perforated but has now broken away. It is dominated by Urnes style openwork decoration which sits on an outline shape of the frame. The ornament, in openwork relief depicts a curling serpent-like beast whose head with pointed curled mouth/face curling downwards at the apex of the mount and body is roughly curled into an S-Shape. The beast is entwined within tendrils. The back of the mount is unfinished and roughly concave. The stirrup mount is mottled light green with speckles of brown.

Measurments: 56.15mm high, 35.47mm wide, 8.21mm thick and 32.93g in weight.

Discussion:

Williams (1997, 55-56) illustrates 6 similar openwork examples of the type and a number have been recorded on the PAS database.
