Title
11th Century Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup strap mount
Description
English: An incomplete copper-alloy stirrup strap-mount of the late early-medieval period, dating from c. AD 1000 - AD1150. It finds its closest parallels in Williams's Class A, Type 1 mounts, with typical pentagonal form and unadorned.

Description: It is pentagonal in form with semi-circular suspension loop at the apex that has a single circular rivet hole. Each side of the plate has a triangular projection with small projecting knops at top and bottom, the upper knops flank the suspension loop. There are two circular rivet holes through the base which correspond with the flange at right angle on the reverse. Any additional decorative elements that may have originally existed on the front face are now missing due to the heavy wear of the object. The object is a bright green colour with an even patina.

Measurements: 44mm long, 29.9mm wide, 6.28mm thick and 22.04g in weight.

Discussion: Other similar examples have been recorded on the database, including WMID-1C5C09 and ESS-C36968. These examples appear to be undecorrated however as much of the decoration on examples illustrated by Williams (1997, 26-34) are very lightly inscribed and it is therefore probable these examples originally had incised decoration which has now been worn away.
