Description |
English: White paper with typed black text July 19, 1971 Mr. Jerry Schober, Superintendent Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg, Pennsylvania My dear Mr. Schober: I had been waiting for a nice letter from you, which would be fitting to include in the “Book of Memories” that I am preparing for Governor McKeithen, at his request. Could you do this right away for me please? He spoke most highly of you and all of the Washington Artillery men were extra proud of you and so was I. As I told you in a recent letter, I am coming to Gettysburg when Mississippi has its dedication and spend a week. I hope at that time to have a chance to talk with you a great deal about our dedication on June the 11th, 1971 and the events of the day. To put them on paper would not be adequate because I could not see your face or hear your answers. I know you are a busy man and because of that, I’m asking only two things of you and they are as follows: 1. Write the letter that I just mentioned that you think the Governor would enjoy as man to man. 2. Send me a colored map, if you have one, with the exact spot marked where our monument is located. I have had several inquiries about the location and I want to be sure that I am correct. I have drawn maps of each of the three days, July 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 1863, and often took them to meetings where I was to speak, showing them the positions of the two armies each day. I am not quite sure, exactly, where to mark the point where we have erected our moment. This would be a great help to me because I could have it copied for a second edition of our historical booklet in which I shall put a full description of the monument. I expect to have this second edition, if I can raise $319.00. The appropriation of $100,000 for the monument has been expended and we no longer have any funds and really do need more copies of the historical booklet made. How does the history of the Louisiana soldiers compare with what you have on file in your office? This question is getting rather long so I will ask you please to honor me, the Governor, and all the others with a prompt answer.
