Dear Mrs. Moore: In accordance with your recent request for the members of the Florida Commission designated to erect a monument to the Florida Regiment which took place in the Battle of Gettysburg, I am listing below the members of this Committee: Col. Walter Raleigh Moore, Lake City, Florida Col. David Lang (8th Florida), Tallahassee, Florida Capt. Ballentine (2nd Florida), Fernandina, Florida Maj. Willian M. Robbinns, Gettysburg, PA Col. John F. Michelson, Gettysburg, PA The Commission visited Gettysburg on July 9, 1895 and at that time visited the battlefield for the purpose of marking the position of Perry’s Brigade of Florida Troops. I am quoting below for your interest an excerpt from the Gettysburg Star and Sentinel of that date. “Florida Commission. The Commission appointed by the Governor of Florida were last week looking up the positions of Perry’s brigade of that state, The party consisted of Gen. David Lang, who commanded the brigade in this battle, also Col. Moore, and Lieut. Col. Balentine of the 2d regiment. Gen. Lang’s command participated in the movement on the evening of the 2d and their advanced position is marked in the Codori meadow, near where Gen. Hancock was wounded. In this charge they captured 3 guns of a U.S. Battery, probably that of Capt. Turnball. When they retired to their former position it was found that the flag of the 8th Florida regiment was missing, An officer returned to the scene of the battery capture and found the flag buried under the dead bodies of the color guard, every member of which was killed. During this engagement Col. Moore and Lieut. Col. Balentine were both wounded. In the charge of the 3d day the brigade took an active part on the right of the Pickett charge line. The veteran left on Monday, much pleased with the visit and expressing their admiration of what had been done in developing and marking the lines of battle.” Sincerely yours, Frederick Tilberg Historian
