Blazon:[edit]

  • Shield: Vert, a bend archy in the colors of the rainbow Proper between in chief the badge of the 2nd Army Corps of the Civil War (a red three-leaf clover outlined in Gold), and in base the cap device of the Regiment of 1851 (the number "69" in Black on an oval shield surmounted by a trefoil and supported by two Irish wolfhounds rampant in Gold).
  • Crest: That for the regiments and separate battalions of the New York Army National Guard: From a wreath Or and Vert, the full rigged ship "Half Moon" all Proper.
  • Motto: GENTLE WHEN STROKED - FIERCE WHEN PROVOKED.

Symbolism:[edit]

  • Shield:
  1. Green reflects the old facings of the 69th Infantry Regiment, the original organization.
  2. The rainbow is adapted from the shoulder sleeve insignia approved for the 42nd Division during World War I.
  3. The old wolfhound cap device has been in use by the former unit since its organization.
  • Crest: The crest is that of the New York Army National Guard.

Background:[edit]

  1. The coat of arms was originally approved on 1924-04-23, for the 165th Infantry Regiment (69th New York Regiment, National Guard).
  2. It was redesignated for the 69th Infantry Regiment on 1964-03-17.
  3. On 1993-03-09 it was redesignated for the 69th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.
  4. On 1996-12-30 the coat of arms was redesignated for the 69th Infantry Regiment.
