English: July 2016 saw me make a very long overdue visit to Finland. In June 1986, as part of a 2 week trip of Scandinavia myself and Adrian Nicholls ("Marra Man" on Flickr) covered some of the main line routes having entered and left Finland via the now closed Haparanda (Sweden) to Tornio border crossing. In 1998, we passed through Finland en-route from St Petersburg to Helsinki to carry on to Sweden via the ferry.
Move on forwards to 2016, the threat of closure of several regional lines (at the time of writing proposed for December 2016) and the opening of a loop line serving Helsinki Airport opened in 2015 was a good excuse as ever to go back. On 4 July 2016 I flew into Helsinki from London Gatwick, took the loop line in one direction to the city centre to begin my travels. My first mainline journey was a typical InterCity service formed of an Sr2 loco plus double deck stock in push-pull formation. No. 3215 is in charge of IC963, 17:37 Helsinki to Turku satama which I took as far as Turku itself for my first night. |
