Description |
English: Roman copper alloy umbonate brooch 39mm in diameter and 16mm deep. The brooch weighs 10.25 grams, with a dark green ptina and has some damage to its edges. The brooch consists of an outer border, 5mm wide, decorated with enamelled inward facing triangles and a 'frilly' edge comprised of triangular cut outs. The central portion of the brooch is domed, 20mm in diameter and 9mm deep. It has a central circular depression surrounded by two lines of inward facing triangles, many of which have traces of red enamel. the reverse has the ramains of a catchplate which is attached to a semi-circular protrusion on the lower side of the brooch. Opposite this, on the upper side, are the remains of a loop which conceals the double lug, 6mm high, on the reverse, part of the hinged pin is still in this fitting. The upper part of teh brooch has traces of silvering. the design matches Fig.209 536 in hattatt but has the lower protrusion of 1060. |
