Description
English: A copper-alloy sword or dagger scabbard chape of probable Late Medieval to early post-Medieval date.

The chape has been cast in one piece. It is 'V-shaped' in plan, with a circular knop at the base. It has vertical outer sides and is open at the back. The upper surface is divided into two by a vertical central ridge. Either side of this ridge is an openwork rectangle with a circular aperture immediately above. At the top, the ridge extends into a central leaf-like projection, which has been bent post-deposition. The chape measures 60mmlong, 25mm wide and 5mm thick. The weight is 9.56g.

A similar chape, found in London, is illustrated by Ward Perkins (1940: 287, fig. 88, no. 7). For a parallel on the PAS database, see IOW-DC61A8.
