Summary
[edit]Description01022 Adinatha temple, Khajuraho Madhya Pradesh 05.jpg |
English: The Adinath temple was built in later half of 11th century. It is dedicated to the first Tirthankara Rishabhanatha, also known as Adinatha. The front section before the sanctum, plain and painted is a structure added many centuries later, then restored in the modern era.
The Adinatha mandir has bands of artwork on its vimana. These include Jaina artwork panels such as those of Gomukha, Yakshi, Sardula, Kinnara, Vidhyadhara, Astadikpala (direction deities), Apsaras and Gandharvas. The most notable are the sixteen Mahavidyas of Jain tradition – found in pillared niches on the outside of the temple. These are notable because they reflect the Tantric tradition of Jainism that emerged in 8th century and then rapidly grew to significance in both Digambara and Svetambara traditions. The Mahavidyas in this temple reflect their mature phase in Jainism and an elegant depiction. These are best compared to their depiction in Jain temples at Osian, Kumbharia, Mt Abu, and others. The Adinatha statue now in the sanctum was built later in the 12th century and was moved in here in the modern era. The pratima-base therefore lacks the traditional bull symbol one would expect with Adinatha statue. |
