Summary[edit]
Description005132023 Masroor group of temples, Himachal Pradesh.jpg |
English: The Masrur rock-cut monolithic temples are an exceptional illustration of the sophisticated temple design and architecture that had developed in India by the 8th century.
Near Beas river, Indian craftsmen then began carving a grand temple complex out of a sandstone ridge in what is now Himachal Pradesh, India. Facing northeast towards the Dhauladhar range and the Himalayas, the Masrur group include shrines and artwork for all major Hindu traditions – Shaivism, Vaishnavism, Shaktism and Sauraism. The Masrur temple group was never finished. Further, earthquake likely caused cracks in the excavated and carved structure. The design embodies the metaphor of a temple as a mountain — a common theme in Indian architecture. Yet, it preserves the ancient ideas found in pre-8th century Hindu temples in a manner similar to Ellora in Maharashtra and rock cut Hindu temples found in Tamil Nadu. Similar ideas are found in the great "temple-mountains" of Cambodia, Vietnam and Indonesia from 9th to 11th century. |
