Auf einem Hügel über der Stadt gebaut, war die mächtige Festung seit 1074 nie von einem Feind in der gesamten Fortsetzung des Dreißigjährigen Krieges besetzt. Prinz Albert, der Ehemann der Königin Victoria , der nach seiner Tätigkeit und seinem Verhalten oft König genannt wurde, und Leopold i, der erste König von Bayern, wurde als Bekannte Herrscher der Grafschaft bekannt. Seit den 20er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts ist die Stadt nach der Entscheidung der Bevölkerung von Thüringen nach Bayern übergegangen. |
