Description
English: A worn and corroded cast copper-alloy object with iron corrosion at one end, of possible Roman date. The object is a linear shaft (square in cross-section) leading to a semicircular section. The shaft is decorated with incised transverse lines, some of which are on all four faces, some on only one. The terminal end of the object is broken (split) and filled with iron corrosion, suggesting this part of a larger object. The semicircular section is domed on the outer surface, but the inner surface has been cast to recreate a cylindrical hole through the centre perpendicular to the shaft. The area between the shaft and the hole has an old break, indicating that although it would not have been a complete circle (the other terminal has a flat, unbroken edge), it could have been continued. There is wear within the cylindrical hole suggesting that something may have run inside the hole, and has rubbed the inner surface creating a wear mark. Beyond the semicircular section is a knop terminal, which is halved cylinder with a notched and narrowed at the tip on the outer face. The inner face is flat and smooth. Where it survives the object has a variable green patina.
