Title
(2019 T735) silver brooch formed from a Medieval coin of Philip IV of France (obverse and reverse)
Description
English: Treasure Case (2019 T735)

Description: A silver and gilt brooch made from a Medieval coin of Philip IV of France (AD 1268 - 1314). The coin is a Gros Tournois which appears to have been gilded on the obverse face only. On the reverse there are a fixing a loop and the remains of a pin. The fixing loop is placed obscuring the R on the legend TVROVS. The remains of the pin obscure the IVI of CIVIS.

Obverse: Cross pattee surrounded by legend in two rows

PHILIPPVS REX (inner)

Reverse: Chatel Tournois topped with cross surrounded by border of twelve lis within arches
TV[R]ONVS C[IVI]S

Dimensions: The brooch measures 25.6 mm in diameter,0.9 mm in thickness and 6.1 mm including the brooch fitting at the reverse. The object weighs 4.6 grams.

Discussion: Coin-brooches are a relatively common class of object in late 13th and early 14th century England.Several parallels of this coin that have been converted to brooches are reported as Treasure and recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, for example 2011 T302 (YORYM-91F842) and (SWYOR-3E69E0) also dating to Philip IV. Another example 2008 T617 (NMS-F323B7) dates to Louis IX (AD 1226-1270). Regarding Treasure case 2008 T654 (NCL-7F9C81) Barrie Cook, Curator of Medieval and Early Modern Coinage at The British Museum writes 'the side of the converted coin on display in its brooch form and usually gilded is that with a prominent cross' which could suggest a specifically religious use as opposed to gilding the reverse displaying the symbol of Tournois which could show allegiance to the town as seen on 2018 T606 (OXON-578A84).

Conclusion: Single coins are not usually considered as potential treasure, however, a coin converted to be worn as an item of jewellery is eligible for consideration. Therefore, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
