Русский: Это изображение было использовано для иллюстрирования статьи «Канал огнестрельного оружия» опубликованной в двенадцатом томе «Военной энциклопедии», который был издан книгоиздательским товариществом И. Д. Сытина в 1913 году в столице Российской империи городе Санкт-Петербурге. Британский инженер-механик Джозеф Витворт (иначе Витуорт, Уитворт) предложил для ружей и для артиллерийских орудий делать канал огнестрельного оружия в виде призмы шестигранного сечения (см. рисунок), тоже скрученной около оси по винтовой линии; такой же вид имела и средняя часть продолговатого снаряда. При такой форме и точности отделки снаряд прилегал большей частью своей поверхности и мог получать большое число оборотов даже при небольшом заряде, так как скручиванию ствола можно было придать большую крутизну без опасения срыва ведущих частей снаряда.
English: Illustration to article "Channel of gun barrel in Book 12 of Military encyclopedia by I.D. Sytin, Russian Empire, Saint Petersburg, 1913. British mechanical engineer Joseph Whitworth proposed making a firearm channel for rifles and artillery pieces in the form of a hexagonal prism (see figure), also twisted about an axis along a helical line; the middle part of the oblong projectile had the same appearance. With this shape and precision of finishing, the projectile adjoined most of its surface and could get a large number of revolutions even with a small charge, since the twisting of the barrel could be given a great steepness without fear of disrupting the leading parts of the projectile.
